When Willows Fall

When Willows Fall – lyrics

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen this town;
The past is overgrown.
It looks a little different now,
This place that I have known.
There’s a few more houses, a few new signs,
A new highway running through.
But one thing that will never change
Are the memories I have of you.

When willows fall
And your dreams come tumbling down,
When willows fall
Your memories linger on.

The road not taken, the promises not kept,
The chance we never took;
Through years of tears and miles of smiles,
I still remember how you looked.
We could have some kids, you said,
A house on Willow Tree Way,
Those trees have all fallen now
With your dreams I took away.

When willows fall
And your dreams come tumbling down,
When willows fall
Your memories linger on.

I visited your grave today
Along with my regrets,
I’ve had my share of fun in life
But there’s one thing I’ve not had yet.
A woman like you to have and hold,
To love and cherish to the end;
Through many lovers and acquaintances
There’s only ever been one best friend.

When willows fall
And your dreams come tumbling down,
When willows fall
Your memories linger on.
When willows fall
And your dreams come tumbling down,
When willows fall,
When willows fall.

Musical Steps – How When Willows Fall was created

How it Started

I wrote this song over twenty years ago while I was writing a screenplay. This song encapsulated the life and regrets of one of the characters. The screenplay didn’t get anywhere but the song has grown in importance for me over these many years.

What Was Next

After bringing Imagine How It Could Be to life with the very talented, Angeliconn, I wanted to do things differently with this song. I found Luca Vincenzetti through an online work-for-hire site, UpWork. His guitar skills greatly impressed me on a not-yet-released song, so I asked him to work on When Willows Fall. As we proceeded, I asked him to do more and more of the composition and production. I am very grateful for Luca, his talent, and his willingness to work with me.

More Work

I like to think I’m a good writer of words, stories, and perhaps melodies. However, creating a musical composition is far outside my skillset. Thus, I needed to trust someone to create the music to this song. Luca Vincenzetti quickly created a terrific first composition. Although it sounded different than what I had initially imagined, I soon found it to be better.

Of course, first drafts are hardly ever final drafts, so we went back and forth several times about our ideas. In the meantime, he continued to improve his composition while I improved my vocal contribution. Because I trust his talent and artistry, I asked him to mix the different elements of the song to create the final product. I hope you like the result as much as I do.
